On a day designed for sharp pencils and even sharper minds, Kapil Sinha was awarded the $1,000 Richard Morgantini Scholarship at the 47th annual Mathletics Competition, held Saturday May 2 at the Monterey County Office of Education. Mathletics is a math contest held annually to encourage excellence in math, and recognize the achievements of individual students and the schools they represent.

Kapil Sinha was the top-scoring student taking the advanced calculus exam.

Nearly 400 elementary, middle and high school students from 48 Monterey County public and private schools participated in the event, which tests students in one of ten levels:  fifth grade math, sixth grade math, seventh grade math, eighth grade math, integrated math 1, integrated math 2, algebra 2, math analysis, calculus AB and calculus BC.

First, second, and third place winners in each level received Amazon gift cards, gift certificates, and an Olympic-sized first, second, or third place medal.  In addition, top-scoring schools for each of the ten tests were awarded plaques (winning schools were determined by the total of the scores for each school’s team members).

A list of individual winners and their school of attendance is attached/shown below.

Mathletics is funded in part by long-time supporter, the Monterey County Richard Morgantini Foundation, as well as Greet Giant by Growers Express, and the California Mathematics Council-Monterey Bay affiliate.
