Schools, Community Colleges & CSUMB Aligning for the Future of Education

Monterey County School Boards Association

The Monterey County School Boards Association convened at California State University Monterey Bay on Thursday, April 14, 2016. Board members and superintendents from school districts across Monterey County, including Monterey Peninsula College and Hartnell College, were joined by CSUMB President, Dr. Eduardo Ochoa, and Dr. Jose Luis Alvarado, Dean of the College of Education.

Thirty-six students from YoSal Youth Orchestra Salinas performed, demonstrating the life-transforming impact YoSal is having on over 70 youth through the inspiration, discipline, and performance of classical ensemble music.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County were honored with the “Excellence in Education” award for the work they do engaging hundreds of children daily in expanded learning programs, including literacy and STEAM.

Dr. Eduardo M. Ochoa presented an address on the Bright Futures Initiative, a community education vision for Monterey County. Since becoming President of CSUMB, Dr. Ochoa has focused on the entire pipeline of children and youth’s educational experience, beginning at birth and extending to their career choices. The initiative, called Bright Futures, is engaging schools, colleges, businesses, and communities in coming together to dramatically improve the quality of education for every child and youth.

Dr. Nancy Kotowski, County Superintendent of Schools, pointed out that the initiative proves a framework that all schools and sectors of our county can connect and together achieve educational excellence from birth to the launch of students’ careers.
