Monterey County Celebrates Solar Eclipse Despite Fog

Employees wearing eclipse glasses try to see the eclipse

Monday, August 21, 2017 was a cloudy day in most of Monterey County, but that didn't stop people young and old from coming together to celebrate the solar eclipse.

In a time where the news can often be discouraging, upsetting, or stressful, this happy celestial event brought the community together. Families from around Monterey County gathered at Hartnell College in the morning to enjoy video and a live stream of the solar eclipse. Many waited outdoors hoping the clouds would part for a viewing here in Salinas, but sadly, it wasn't meant to be.

Our MCOE staff tried and tried (with glasses and all!) to see something, but weren't able to get a glimpse of the sun.

If you weren't able to see one of the most anticipated and unifying events this country has witnessed in nearly a hundred years, don't worry. You won't have to wait an entire century until the next one - just seven years. Another total solar eclipse will be visible in the United States on  April 8, 2024.

Traveling a different path from the 2017 eclipse, the total eclipse will be visible in Mexico, the central US and east Canada, with a partial eclipse visible across North and Central America.

Fog couldn't damper the positive spirit and excited energy throughout Monterey County and we are preparing for a sunny day on April 8, 2024!
