State Speech and Debate Tournament held in Monterey

Monterey County Migrant Education Program Hosts State Speech & Debate Tournament

15 Monterey County Entrants Win Trophies

Nearly 250 Migrant Education students from around California gathered on May 16 for the 5th Annual State Speech & Debate Tournament at Monterey High School.  The tournament was hosted by Migrant Education Region XVI, a program of the Monterey County Office of Education (MCOE).

The tournament offers 6th through 12th grade migrant students a meaningful context to sharpen their public speaking skills and experience the excitement of prepared argumentation and persuasion. To prepare for the tournament, students research assigned topics, and practice after school and during lunch sessions with teammates and coaches.

“The students show so much dedication in preparing for this tournament,” said Dr. Ernesto Vela, Director of Migrant Education Region XVI. “The experience will build a sense of pride and self-confidence that will serve them throughout their lives.”

The state tournament was supported by 100 coaches and chaperones, 56 judges, and 26 high school student facilitators.

On April 29, the Monterey County School Boards Association honored the Migrant Education Speech & Debate Tournament with its “Excellence in Education” award.
