Very Special Field Day for Very Special Students

We try not to pick favorites, but this MCOE annual event is always at the top of our list! Each year, MCOE's Field Day hosts nearly 200 Monterey County Office of Education special education students from locations throughout Monterey County in grades 1 through 12. The theme “If I Had Fun, I Won!” rings true in these beautiful smiling faces. This year's event was held on Friday, May 4, 2018 at Rabobank Stadium in Salinas.

The ball throw, turbo javelin, standing long jump, and multiple wheel chair races and running events specifically designed for moderately to severely disabled students filled the morning with excited energy and lots of enthusiastic cheering. High school students from Carmel High School served as volunteers to assist the MCOE Adapted Physical Education teachers who coordinated all of the games and festivities.

“Field Day is a unique opportunity for our special education students to enjoy a variety of physical activities with their peers,” said Dr. Nancy Kotowski, Monterey County Superintendent of Schools. “The joy they express is contagious. Carmel High School students also find serving at Field Day a great experience.”

Thank you to our families, staff members, local media, and most of all our student volunteers and student participants for making Field Day another tremendous success!
