Annual County Science and Engineering Fair to be held at California State University Monterey Bay
Seaside, Calif. – More than 500 students from middle schools and high schools from across the county will exhibit and present over 350 science projects in this year’s 2016 annual Monterey County Science and Engineering Fair Competition held from Friday, March 4 through Sunday, March 6. The public is invited to view winning science projects at the University Center from 11:00 a.m. until the awards ceremony at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 6.
Fair participants are drawn from public, private, parochial and home-schools in Monterey County. Through the annual Fair competition, hundreds of the county's students are challenged to go beyond their classroom studies to do independent project-based research. They work independently or in teams to address questions in a wide-variety of scientific fields including Computer Science, Environmental Science, Medicine & Health, Chemistry, and Biology.
Students display their research projects and present their findings orally and through written journals to a team of 100 scientists who volunteer as judges. Through interactions with the participants, judges confirm the students’ understanding of the scientific concepts and the research methods involved in their projects. The judges also offer practical and positive feedback regarding the students’ application of the scientific method to a problem, encouraging them to improve their future scientific research efforts.
Science Fair projects are awarded prizes with 22 top projects becoming eligible to participate in the California State Science Fair. The top three Senior Division projects may be eligible to participate in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, which will be held in Phoenix, Arizona in May.
The Monterey County Science & Engineering Fair a collaborative effort affiliated with the Society for Science & the Public that is sponsored by the Monterey County Office of Education, the Naval Postgraduate School, California State University Monterey Bay, and many community partners.
