Monterey County Organizations Honored as Champions for Children and Youth Growing Up in Foster Care System

Salinas, Calif. – Children and youth who are growing up in the foster care system face unique challenges and are in need of many support systems as they grow. They are often moved from place to place and do not have a secure family support structure. In Monterey County, there are many organizations that support foster children and youth.

The Monterey County Office of Education and Board of Education wish to recognize four champion organizations that create a network of family-like support, each providing many aspects of care that are needed for foster children and youth to grow into healthy, resilient people. Over the years, Voices for Children CASA, Peacock Acres, Door to Hope, and The Epicenter have nurtured local foster children and youth and will be showcased during a press conference event on: Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in MCOE’s Rooms A & B at 901 Blanco Circle, Salinas.

Speakers at the event will be:

  • Dr. Nancy Kotowski – Monterey County Superintendent of Schools
  • Dr. Faris Sabbah, Assistant Superintendent of Student Services – Monterey County Office of Education
  • Denise Lang, Foster Youth Services Coordinator – Monterey County Office of Education
  • Linda Fosler, Executive Director – Voices for Children, CASA of Monterey County
  • Kathy Burrola, Clinical Director, and Chris Shannon, Executive Director – Door to Hope
  • Teressa Jimenez, Director of Development, and Jasmine Flanagan, Therapeutic Learning Center Educational Coordinator – Peacock  Acres
  • Gary Vincent, Executive Director – The Epicenter
  • Rosa Anaya, Youth Advocate Intern for The Epicenter and a Foster Youth

National Foster Care Awareness Month is a month set aside to acknowledge foster parents, family members, volunteers, mentors, policymakers, child welfare professionals, and other members of the community who help children in foster care find permanent homes, healthy connections, and the resources to lead a successful and rewarding life.
