Deneen Guss, Ed. D., Deputy Superintendent
Deneen Guss, a veteran educator, is the Deputy Superintendent of the Monterey County Office of Education. She has served in district and site leadership positions for over seventeen years. She is a former District Superintendent, Associate Superintendent of Educational Services, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Principal and Assistant Principal. Prior to beginning her administrative duties she also taught at the elementary level for a total of ten years.
Deneen is dedicated to her community and serves in a variety of roles with local non-profit organizations dedicated to making a positive difference in the community. She is a Rotarian and has served as Rotary President, and currently serves as chairperson for the Central Coast YMCA Board. She is a Steering Committee member for Impact Monterey County, a group focused on assessing the needs of Monterey County residents, and also serves on the Steering Committee for the Epicenter (an organization focused on meeting the needs of at-risk students in Monterey County). In addition, Deneen is a Leadership Team member of Bright Futures, which is an alliance of businesses, educators, non-profits, government agencies, and parents engaged collaboratively to strengthen the Monterey County community by improving the educational success of young people.
Deneen has been recognized as Soledad Unified School District’s Administrator of the Year, Soledad Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year, and has also received the Child Abuse Prevention Council Community Education Award.
Deneen has a master’s degree from San Jose State University in education administration and supervision and a doctorate degree in educational leadership from Argosy University. She is married and is the proud parent of Christopher who is an aerospace engineer graduate from UC San Diego and Katelynn who is an animal science graduate from UC Davis.
Jessica Herfurth, Confidential Senior Executive Assistant
Jessica Herfurth, assistant to Deputy Superintendent Deneen Guss, has served at the Monterey County Office of Education for many years in various capacities, including assisting the Alternative Education and Educational Services departments. In addition to her service at MCOE, she volunteers for various education related activities, including servicing as a judge for the annual Monterey County History Day.
Jessica currently holds an Associate's degree in Social and Behavioral Science and a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from California State University Monterey Bay.
